Abkhazia is a republic in South Caucasus at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It covers 8,665 square kilometres and has a population of around 245,000. Currently, it has partial recognition in the world.
To the north lies the Caucasian mountain range, to the east lies Georgia with which Abkhazia fought a war, and to the south lies the Black Sea. To the northwest lies Russia.
Abkhazia’s economy depends overwhelmingly on tourism from Russia and in recent years it has drifted closer to Russia. In 2009 Moscow signed a five-year agreement with Abkhazia to take formal control of its frontiers with Georgia proper, while in 2014 Russia and the region signed a “strategic partnership” agreement.
